Why the Apprenticeship model?
Why would someone choose to be trained for ministry by doing the Apprenticeship?
- Biblical Training in the Context of Discipleship: The model laid out by Jesus and Paul was for a teacher to take personal responsibility to entrust both the truth and his life in their disciples. True learning only takes place when what is learned is put into practice, and a disciple who is fully trained, will actually be like his teacher.
- Biblical Study in the Context of Real Life: Since the Bible was written primarily to deal with real life situations, hearts, and people, it is vital to be in the context of dealing with hurting and broken people to truly understand what Scripture is intended to teach us. No matter how smart we are, it is difficult to understand purely theoretical truth.
- Character Development through Discipleship: Rigorous study of the Bible is necessary to be equipped as pastors. But the qualifications for eldership primarily focus on the character of the pastor. In the Apprenticeship, we work on building both the skills and character needed by pastors.

Looks like
- Personal Discipleship - Beyond the classroom, you will meet regularly with a pastor. During this time, you will be able to discuss personal challenges and seek pastoral insight. The focus of this time will be pastoral. You will be able to be transparent about your struggles and life issues. You can expect gentle rebukes, patient corrections and motivating encouragement to continue abiding in Christ. Time will be spent seeking God together in prayer for His help to walk with Him.
- Fireside Discussions - Every week you will get together for an evening to discuss a theological position, philosophical ministry model, or cultural concept. A leader will introduce the topic and then facilitate a dialogue with the students. This time will be casual, conversational, and relational in a non-classroom setting. You will develop the art of thinking biblical through topics, learning from peers, and articulating your thoughts in a humble and mutually edifying manner.
- Ministry Mentorship - Just as Jesus used ministry as opportunities for teaching, in the Apprenticeship, you will learn as you walk alongside of your mentor: observing, asking questions, and dialoging about ministry. As trust is developed between you and your mentor, the level of partnership and leadership will naturally increase. Many students will be given the freedom and guidance to lead various aspects of ministry.
- Prayer Partners - In addition to the Apprenticeship staff and your mentor(s) praying for you, we want to help connect you to prayer partners who will commit to praying for you during the duration of the program. We want our whole program to be saturated in prayer. You will provide your prayer partners with regular updates so that they can pray more specifically for you and be blessed with how God is answering their prayers.
